From Baku to Gabala in a Lada Xray: a crossover for mountain roads
My name is Sergey Volkov, I am from Novosibirsk, and my wife and I spent ten days in Azerbaijan. Half of the trip was planned for the mountains: Gabala, Ismayilli and the villages around them.
We arranged car rental in Baku with Karavan Rent A Car in Baku and deliberately chose the Lada Xray. In the mountains ground clearance matters, and village roads are not always asphalted.
The car was handed over at the office, clean and fully fuelled. Everything was explained clearly, including what to do if we had any trouble outside the city.
The road from Baku to Gabala took about four hours. The Xray is comfortable on the highway and the raised suspension smooths out the rougher patches of asphalt.
In Gabala we drove to Tufandag, Nohur Lake and the Seven Beauties waterfall. Then we went on to the village of Lahij over a mountain road with gravel sections — exactly where a crossover justifies itself.
The boot took both our suitcases plus everything we bought along the way. For two people travelling around the regions the space is more than enough.
Fuel spending over ten days was very reasonable, and we did not have to worry about the road surface once during the whole trip.
If you are planning car rental in Baku with a route through the mountain regions, the Lada Xray is a very sensible choice. Gabala, Ismayilli and Lahij are all easily within reach.
