From Baku to Gabala in a Ravon R2: the cheapest way to see the mountains

My name is Oleg Tarasov, I am from Voronezh, and I came to Azerbaijan with a friend for a week. We are not fussy travellers and were happy to save on the car in order to spend more on the trip itself.

We arranged car rental in Baku with Karavan Rent A Car in Baku and took a Ravon R2 — the cheapest car in their fleet.

The car was handed over at the office. Small, simple, but in good technical condition: the engine runs cleanly, the brakes are fine, the tyres are in order. That is all you actually need for a road trip.

The drive from Baku to Gabala took us about four and a half hours. The R2 is not fast and you notice the engine on the climbs, but it got us everywhere without a single problem.

In Gabala we drove to Tufandag, Nohur Lake and the waterfall. The mountain roads are asphalted and the little car managed the gradients in a lower gear.

The fuel bill for the whole week was ridiculous in the best sense. Two people, a week of driving including a long trip to the regions, and the cost was a fraction of what we expected.

On the way back we stopped in Shamakhi and Ismayilli. The car never gave us a reason to worry about breaking down far from the city.

If your priority is the lowest possible cost, I recommend car rental in Baku with this model. The Ravon R2 will take you to Gabala and back and leave almost all your budget for the holiday.
