Ski Center Baku: Skiing and Snowboarding All Year Round in Central Baku

In short. On 1 October 2026, Ski Center Baku opened in Baku — a 2,800-square-metre indoor centre for skiing and snowboarding. Inside are three MaxxTracks training slopes and an Olympus SkyTech simulator, so you can ski here all year round, whatever the weather. The Azerbaijan Winter Sports Federation presented it as the second-largest indoor ski centre in the world. The centre is designed for both beginners and experienced skiers, and one of its main goals is to bring children and young people into winter sports.

Until recently, getting on skis in Azerbaijan meant heading to the mountains — to Shahdag, a couple of hundred kilometres from the capital. Now you can make your first turns right in the city: in July, when it’s 35 °C outside, or on a rainy October evening after work.

What opened and who opened it

The opening ceremony took place on 1 October 2026. It was attended by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibov and Fuad Naghiyev — President of the Winter Sports Federation and Chairman of the State Tourism Agency — along with other officials.

The centre is located in Baku’s Narimanov District, at the Whitestone Towers complex on Izzatdin Hasanoglu Street. Its core idea is to make skiing and snowboarding training possible all year, not just during the short winter season in the mountains.

Ski Center Baku has opened — a 2,800 m² indoor ski centre with three MaxxTracks slopes and a simulator. How it works, who it suits and where to go next.

How the MaxxTracks slopes work

MaxxTracks is a Dutch manufacturer of indoor slopes that has been developing them since 1986. The principle is similar to a treadmill: an inclined surface with an artificial covering moves continuously downhill while the skier stays in place, skiing “against” it. The result is a practically endless descent with no lifts and no queues.

What’s worth knowing about these slopes, using the manufacturer’s standard model as an example:

  • Skiing surface — about 7.5 by 5 metres.
  • Slope angle adjusts from 9 to 20 degrees — from a gentle beginner slope to a steep section.
  • Belt speed is continuously adjustable.
  • The instructor stands alongside and can slow down or stop the slope instantly by remote control.
  • The surface is white artificial pile, which feels noticeably softer than ice when you fall.

The manufacturer says one session on such a slope is comparable in workload to a whole day on a regular run. That’s why these trainers are used not only for teaching but also for pre-season preparation. The centre hasn’t yet specified which models are installed in Baku.

What a session on this kind of slope usually looks like

Centres with moving slopes structure their sessions in much the same way, and it’s quite different from skiing in the mountains:

  1. Choosing equipment. Boots, skis or a snowboard are fitted on site to your height and level.
  2. A short briefing. The instructor shows you the basic stance and explains how to hold the handrail at first.
  3. Working in blocks. You ski in short spells — for example, 10 minutes — with rest breaks: the load on your legs is higher than on a normal slope, as there are no pauses on a lift.
  4. Gradual progression. As you improve, the instructor increases the angle and speed of the belt.
  5. Technique control. There’s usually a mirror in front of the slope, so you see mistakes immediately, and the instructor corrects them on the spot.

Usually one to three people ski on the slope at a time, so the instructor’s attention isn’t lost in a crowd.

The Olympus SkyTech simulator

The centre’s fourth “run” is a simulator. Judging by the name, it’s SkyTechSport’s flagship Olymp model. Rather than a moving belt, it’s an active platform with motors and sensors: it reproduces the loads and movements of a real carving turn while a virtual run plays on the screen.

The flagship model has a 7-metre-wide platform and lateral loads of up to 2.5 G. Simulators like this are used to fine-tune technique — including by professional teams.

Ski Center Baku: Indoor Ski Centre in Baku — What's Inside

Who Ski Center Baku suits

Who you are How the centre helps
Never been on skis Learn the basics calmly beside an instructor, with no cold and no crowded slopes
A child or teenager The centre focuses on children and young people; the slope maker says lessons can start from age 4–5
An experienced skier or snowboarder Restore your technique before the season and don’t waste the first days of your holiday warming up
A tourist in Baku in summer An unusual activity for a day when it’s hot outside
An athlete Year-round training instead of a short winter window

The centre’s plans

The Federation names bringing children and young people into winter sports as its priority. Introductory programmes are planned for schoolchildren, training groups for new athletes and seminars for coaches. The project’s aim is to expand winter sports training in Azerbaijan and raise a new generation of athletes.

What to know before you go

  • Address: Whitestone Towers, 74 Izzatdin Hasanoglu Street, Narimanov District, Baku AZ1166
  • Opening hours, visiting rules and prices are set by the centre itself and may change.
  • Equipment. Venues with this kind of slope usually provide skis, boots and snowboards on site, but it’s best to check in advance.
  • Clothing. It’s warm inside, so comfortable sportswear is fine — no need for a ski suit.
  • There’s no snow here: you ski on a moving pile surface.

From the trainer to real mountains

Ski Center Baku is a great warm-up before a trip to the snow. And Azerbaijan does have snow: the ski season usually runs from December to March.

Resort Where Good to know
Shahdag Gusar district, about 200 km from Baku the country’s largest resort, elevation 1,435–2,552 m, runs for all levels
Tufandag Gabala a mountain resort in one of the most scenic parts of the country
Agbulag Nakhchivan, about 2,000 m above sea level the newest resort, with a 952-metre cable car

Shahdag and Gabala are easiest to reach by car: the drive from Baku to Shahdag takes about three hours. In winter it’s best to head into the mountains in a crossover or SUV and set off early so you arrive in daylight. Nakhchivan is reached by plane.

If you’re planning a trip like this, the simplest option is to pick up a car in Baku — for example, practise your technique at Ski Center Baku in the morning and drive to Shahdag the next day. You can rent a car for as little as one day, and managers are available around the clock — more in our articles on car rental in Baku for 1 day and 24/7 car rental.
