Affordable Car Rental in Baku: BYD Economy Cars from Market Leader Karavan Rent A Car in Baku — Qin Plus, Destroyer 05 and Seal 05
In short. The best-value option for car rental in Baku at Karavan Rent A Car in Baku is the BYD hybrid saloons in the economy class: the Qin Plus, Destroyer 05 and Seal 05. All three have an automatic gearbox, climate control and a reversing camera, while the 1.5 plug-in hybrid keeps fuel costs down in traffic and on the open road. You never have to plug the car in. Hire periods begin at 24 hours; you can go deposit-free with “All Risks Zero” or the “No Deposit” service, add a second driver at no cost and drive as far as you like inside Azerbaijan.
People hunting for cheap car rental in Baku usually line up the daily rates side by side. Yet the rate is only part of what a trip ends up costing. On top come fuel, a deposit frozen on your card, a fee for an extra driver, mileage caps and admin charges on fines. Truly affordable rental means a car that uses little fuel and a company with no hidden extras.
That’s how the economy class at Karavan Rent A Car in Baku is built: it includes modern BYD hybrids, and the terms are clear from day one. Below you’ll find where the savings come from, how the models compare and why it pays to rent from the market leader.
What makes car rental in Baku cheaper
| Cost | How Karavan Rent A Car in Baku handles it |
|---|---|
| Fuel | the BYD plug-in hybrid runs some stretches purely on battery power and is frugal with petrol the rest of the way |
| Deposit | not needed at all if you take full “All Risks Zero” protection or top up standard insurance with “No Deposit” |
| Second driver | written into the agreement at no cost |
| Mileage | unlimited within Azerbaijan |
| Fines | passed on without any mark-up |
| Breakdown | technical assistance and another car if you weren’t to blame |
| Minimum term | one day, so you never pay for days you don’t need |
Every line in that table is money that stays in your pocket. The difference shows most on long drives such as Baku to Gabala or Baku to Sheki, where fuel use and mileage limits can quickly turn into a hefty surcharge.
Why our economy class relies on BYD
BYD was founded in February 1995 as a battery maker and entered the car business in 2003 by buying the Qinchuan factory. Since March 2022 it has produced only new-energy vehicles: electric cars and plug-in hybrids. In 2025 the brand sold 4,602,436 of them, and in November 2024, by its own account, BYD became the first carmaker in the world to build 10 million new-energy vehicles.
That matters for a rental for two reasons. First, BYDs are frugal: the DM-i hybrid system the brand introduced in January 2021 is designed around low fuel use. Second, these are recent models with large screens and driver-assistance systems that used to be found only in pricier cars.
Every economy BYD in our fleet is a five-seat saloon pairing a 1.5 petrol unit with an electric motor through an automatic gearbox. The model pages list automatic climate control, cruise, a rear-view camera, parking sensors, leather seats, a touchscreen and Bluetooth on all of them.
BYD Qin Plus — China’s No. 1 saloon in 2024
The Qin Plus DM-i was unveiled together with the DM-i system itself and was one of the first models to use it. Figures cited by CarNewsChina make the Qin Plus the top-selling saloon in China for 2024, with 480,025 sold in the domestic market. The Champion Edition, launched in February 2023, measures 4,765 mm with a 2,718 mm wheelbase, and the maker quoted 3.8 L/100 km once the battery is run down.
Our fleet has two versions: the Qin Plus and the updated Qin Plus New. The model page says the Qin Plus New covers up to 55 km on electricity and up to 1,500 km on a full tank and charge. According to the model page, its boot takes one L-size and two M-size suitcases. The Qin Plus DM-i uses BYD’s own Blade battery, which, according to BYD, gives off no smoke or fire in a nail-penetration test.

BYD Destroyer 05 — the roomiest boot
The Destroyer 05 was the first saloon in BYD’s Ocean range and went on sale in March 2022. According to the same CarNewsChina figures, 217,232 were sold in China in 2024, ranking it tenth among all saloons in the country. BYD built the model with two batteries, good for 55 or 120 km on electricity. Our fleet has the version with up to 55 km of electric range.
The wheelbase is 2,718 mm. On board you’ll find wireless charging for your phone, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, adaptive cruise and 360° cameras. Even with every seat taken, you won’t need to fold the rear seats: the boot fits two L-size suitcases, or one L-size and two M-size.
BYD Seal 05 — a fifth-generation hybrid
The Seal 05 DM-i is an updated, renamed Destroyer 05 running the fifth-generation hybrid system. It went on sale in February 2025. According to CarNewsChina, it covers 43 or 90 km on electricity on the WLTC cycle, depending on the battery, and its total range exceeds 2,000 km.
The model page gives a length of 4.8 m. Our car’s description lists a rotating touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist.

When an economy BYD is the right choice
- A week’s holiday. Airport pick-up, the city, Gobustan and the Absheron coast: a saloon with an automatic, a camera and air conditioning handles it all, and a bigger class would just mean paying more.
- A business trip. Quiet electric running, phone navigation through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and climate control turn a BYD into a mobile office.
- A trip to the regions. The long range gets you to Gabala or Sheki and back without hunting for filling stations.
When is it worth going up a class? When there are more than five of you, when the bags won’t fit a saloon boot, or when winter mountain roads are on the itinerary. For those trips, see our top 10 reliable crossovers and our best cars for mountain trips.
Driving a plug-in hybrid
For many people, a rental is their first time behind the wheel of a plug-in hybrid. There’s nothing to worry about: it’s as easy to drive as any automatic.
- No socket needed. While the battery has charge, the BYD runs on electricity. When the charge drops, the petrol engine starts up and acts as a generator, topping up the battery as you drive.
- Fill up with ordinary petrol at any filling station.
Why renting from the market leader pays off
Karavan Rent A Car in Baku opened on 5 October 2008 and over eighteen years has grown into Azerbaijan’s largest rental company. Here’s what stands behind that:
- Over 400 vehicles split across eight classes, ranging from economy saloons to executive SUVs.
- The chair of ACRA, Azerbaijan’s car rental association. Members sign up to eight fair-practice rules and are audited annually for a public White List of trustworthy firms.
- ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certificates from Bureau Veritas, covering quality, environmental and occupational safety management.
- Its own KARAVAN trademark, registered in the founding year; the renewed certificate is valid until 20 November 2035.
- Over 10,000 customer reviews across Google, Yandex, TripAdvisor and 2GIS.
- Corporate clients such as SOCAR, the contractors working for it, SLB, Halliburton and McDermott. When Baku hosted Eurovision in 2012, Karavan Rent A Car in Baku was part of the contest’s transport operation.
- A service every 5,000 km, plus a fresh set of tyres every 50,000 km.
For you, that means predictability: a car in good order, a fair contract, and a team that answers the phone day and night if trouble strikes mid-journey.
How to rent for even less
- Ask for the rate on your dates in good time. It varies with the season and with fleet demand.
- Corporate long-term rental is available for three months, six months or a year.
- Go for the “Surprise-Car S” tariff when any economy car will do. You book the economy class rather than a specific car and get whichever is free on the day, at a lower price than any model chosen by name. BYDs are among the cars you might get. Details are on the tariff page.
- Settle on your co-driver before pick-up: they can be registered only at handover.
