Wheelchair Rental in Baku with Your Hire Car: An Exclusive Offer from Karavan Rent A Car in Baku
The short version. Wheelchair rental in Baku can now be arranged in the same booking as your car. Karavan Rent A Car in Baku has launched a new extra: you reserve a compact folding wheelchair together with the car, and both arrive at the same time.
A holiday with elderly parents, a trip after an injury or an operation, travelling with a relative who struggles to walk far: in every one of these cases, a car only solves half the problem. The other half begins once you have parked — a stroll along the seafront, the galleries of a museum, a shopping centre, or simply the way from the door to your restaurant table.
That is exactly who this new extra is for. The wheelchair folds, so it can stay with you all day: drive there, lift it out, unfold it and off you go.
The exclusive offer: what you get
| What matters | How it works |
|---|---|
| What you get | a compact folding wheelchair |
| Which car | a car of any class |
| Who brings it | a delivery service manager, together with the car |
| Where | the Heydar Aliyev International Airport terminal, your hotel entrance or any address you give us |
| When to book | in advance, in the same request as the car — the number of wheelchairs is limited |
| Price | a paid extra; ask the manager for the cost |
There is no need to track down a medical equipment supplier or coordinate deliveries with different people.
How to order the wheelchair
- Send us on WhatsApp your rental dates, the car class or model, where you want the car delivered, and mention that you need a wheelchair. The manager will check that one is free for your dates and tell you the price of the extra and of delivery.
- Send a photo of your passport and driving licence to the same chat.
- Make the 20% prepayment — the manager sends a voucher that secures your booking.
- At the time you’ve arranged, a manager from our delivery service arrives with the car and the wheelchair. By then the contract is drawn up in your name: you check the car over together, sign and get the keys.
Which car to choose when you travel with a wheelchair
The wheelchair can be added to a car of any class, so choose by your route, the number of passengers and how much luggage you have. A few pointers will make getting in and out easier:
- A minivan for the family. The Hyundai Staria’s floor is high and level and its side doors slide open, so passengers walk into the cabin instead of climbing up — a real help for older relatives. The Kia Carnival’s sliding doors also make boarding easier. Every model is compared in our guide to choosing a minivan in Baku.
- A higher seat. If the passenger finds it hard to lower themselves into a low seat, look at a crossover or a minivan.
- Plenty of luggage. Let the manager know the number of passengers and suitcases, and they’ll recommend a class that leaves space for the wheelchair too.
- With a driver. If nobody in your group wants to drive, you can hire the car with a driver and give the passenger your full attention instead of the road. Read how the service works in Car rental with driver in Baku, and ask the manager whether a wheelchair can be added to that kind of booking.
Getting around Baku in a wheelchair: what to know before you go
The airport. At Heydar Aliyev International Airport, assistance for passengers with special needs is free of charge. It is provided by the ground handling company: staff provide a wheelchair, escort the passenger through the terminal to boarding and, where needed, use an ambulift to bring them on board. These passengers skip the queue at check-in and security. The airport describes Terminal 1 as a completely barrier-free environment, and there are multipurpose toilets on every floor of the departure and arrival halls. On arrival in Baku, staff help you off the plane and with your baggage, then escort you to your transport.
Request this assistance through your airline or tour operator at least 48 hours before departure; without advance notice, the airport cannot guarantee it. Help is given inside the building only: there is no escort from the car park to the terminal entrance.
Flying with your own wheelchair. Under Azerbaijan Airlines rules, wheelchairs a passenger needs throughout the journey are carried free of charge.
The metro. The Baku Metro is working on accessibility. Passengers with limited mobility can book an escort by metro staff in advance, and stations where a lift cannot be installed are being fitted with special devices, signs and staff.
Parking. Under Azerbaijan’s law on the rights of persons with disabilities, 5% of spaces in car parks — and never fewer than one — are reserved for people with disabilities, and only vehicles displaying the disability sign may use them. In front of the airport’s Terminal 1 there are also dedicated spaces for passengers with special needs.
Pavements and underpasses. In their reviews, foreigners living in Baku note that kerbs are high in places and that escalators in pedestrian underpasses are not always running. That is why it is easier to plan door-to-door trips by car and park as close to the entrance as possible.
The Old City and museums. Tour services warn that walking routes through Icherisheher are poorly suited to people with reduced mobility because of stairs and uneven stone paving. According to the same services, the Maiden Tower has no lift, so only its ground floor is accessible in a wheelchair, while at the Palace of the Shirvanshahs the main courtyards can be navigated but there are steps in places. The Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, according to the Network of European Museum Organisations (NEMO), has taken measures to be accessible to wheelchair users. When planning your day, check access arrangements with each venue directly.
Why it is easier with Karavan Rent A Car in Baku
Karavan Rent A Car in Baku opened its doors on 5 October 2008 and is today Azerbaijan’s biggest car rental company. For guests who need a wheelchair, what counts is not the title but how the service works day to day:
- A wide choice. Over 400 vehicles split across eight classes, ranging from fuel-efficient saloons to roomy minivans.
- Round-the-clock delivery. Your car will be there even if your flight lands in the middle of the night.
- No deposit needed. Skip it with “All Risks Zero” full cover, or by adding “No Deposit” to your booking.
- A free second driver. Someone close to you can share the driving; just name them at handover.
- Trusted by the market. It heads ACRA, the national association of car rental firms, holds Bureau Veritas certification to three ISO standards — 9001, 14001 and 45001 — and its reviews on Google, Yandex, TripAdvisor and 2GIS now number more than 10,000.
The core terms are simple: drivers must be 21–65 and have held a licence for a year or more, and bring a passport and driving licence; rentals start from a single day. Everything else is covered in our guide to rental requirements in Baku.
