“An Armenian Stamp Is Not Grounds for Refusal”: Karavan Tackles Travellers’ Most Common Fear Before a Trip to Azerbaijan

"I have Armenian stamps in my passport — will they turn me away in Baku?" It's one of the most common questions on travel forums. The short answer: as a rule, no. Here's where the real line of risk lies, what official sources say and how to stay off the blacklist.

Karavan Rent A Car in Baku has published a guide in its Travelers Club answering one of the most common questions on travel forums: will you be allowed into Azerbaijan if you have already been to Armenia?

The short answer, based on official sources: as a rule, yes. Armenian stamps, visas and a tourist trip to Yerevan or Lake Sevan are not in themselves grounds for refusal of entry, although border officers may question you in detail about your route. The real line is visiting Karabakh without Azerbaijan’s permission: Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry puts such travellers on its list of undesirable persons.

The guide brings together the positions of four official sources — the foreign ministries of Azerbaijan, the UK and Germany, and the US State Department. It also explains how the ministry’s list works, how people end up on it and how they can be removed: in 2023, for example, 58 foreign journalists were taken off the list at once.

Another key topic is visiting Karabakh legally. Since July 2025 foreigners can visit Shusha, Lachin, Aghdam, Fuzuli, Khojaly and Khankendi with a permit via the yolumuzqarabaga.az portal or with a licensed tour operator. Karavan Rent A Car in Baku allows such trips in its cars.

The guide also includes a “30-second algorithm”, a table of situations, passport control tips and a list of sources. It is for general information only: the final decision on entry rests with the border service.
