1.5 Litres, Not 3, and Caviar Up to 125 Grams: Karavan Checks Baku Customs Rules Against the Official Website and Busts Popular Myths

What Can You Bring Into Azerbaijan Through Baku Airport Customs

Karavan Rent A Car in Baku has published a guide to Azerbaijan’s customs rules in its Travelers Club. Every allowance in it has been checked against the official website of the State Customs Committee, and the main focus is on myths that have been passed from one guidebook to another for years.

For example, many sites still say you can bring 3 litres of alcohol and 600 cigarettes. Under Committee rules, a person aged 18 or over can bring in 1.5 litres of alcohol in total and 200 cigarettes. Up to 125 grams of sturgeon caviar can be taken out — not 600, as some sources claim. And contrary to another myth, tourists are not banned from taking manats out: up to 20,000 manats and foreign currency up to 10,000 dollars can be taken out by oral declaration.

A separate section covers medicines. According to the Committee and the legal lists, tramadol, pregabalin (Lyrica) and gabapentin are on the list of potent substances, and alprazolam is on the list of controlled psychotropic substances. The law covers all dosage forms regardless of brand name, so it’s the active ingredient that should be checked.

The guide also explains exporting carpets with a certificate, the rules for religious literature following a Committee clarification from September 2026, and why pepper spray is classed as a gas weapon in Azerbaijan. For guests returning a rental car before their flight, there’s a tip to allow time for customs and the VAT refund: Karavan Rent A Car in Baku delivers and collects cars at the airport and at any convenient address.

The guide is for general information only: the final decision rests with the customs authority.
