Karavan Rent A Car in Baku Publishes a Model for Calculating When Buying a Car Stops Beating Renting

The "rent or buy" question is framed wrong. The right question is which month buying starts to win for you specifically. Here's the three-variable model and what's only visible from inside a fleet.

Karavan Rent A Car in Baku, Azerbaijan’s largest car rental operator, has published a piece proposing a model for calculating at which point in a stay buying a car starts to beat long-term rental. The piece is aimed primarily at expats arriving in the country on contract.

According to the company, the question “which is cheaper” is framed wrong, and the answer is determined by just three variables: the realistic horizon of the stay, annual mileage, and the degree of control over the date the car is sold. The last of these, the company notes, is ignored by almost everyone doing the calculation — and it is the one that most often flips the result.

The piece includes a decision matrix built on those three parameters. The guide runs as follows: at under 12 months renting wins almost always; at over 36 months with more than 15,000 km a year buying wins; and the range between them requires an individual calculation. A separate row of the matrix covers the situation where the departure date is unknown — in which case, the company argues, the other variables barely matter.

For the first time, the company has publicly disclosed its own fleet servicing schedule: every vehicle is serviced every 5,000 km with an oil change, all filters replaced, and a check of every major assembly, while tyres are replaced every 50,000 km. For comparison, typical manufacturer recommendations of 10,000–15,000 km are cited. The company’s practical conclusion: if a professional operator in the same conditions halves or thirds the interval, then budgeting personally against the factory figure understates that line by roughly a factor of three.

The piece also examines less obvious factors: the five-year threshold after which a car immediately enters the inspection cycle; emissions as the leading technical cause of failure at the inspection line; and the 5,000 manat ceiling on mandatory ICBARI insurance for property damage, which does not cover the owner’s own vehicle.
