Can You Drive a Front-Wheel-Drive Crossover to Shahdag or Tufandag? Season-by-Season Advice from Karavan Rent A Car in Baku

Can You Drive a FWD SUV to Shahdag – Karavan Rent A Car in Baku

⚠️ Important. This guide is purely informational. Karavan Rent A Car in Baku doesn’t arrange visits to the Shahdag or Tufandag resorts and can’t deal with questions about them. The resorts’ rules, opening arrangements and prices may change, so please check them directly with each resort.

The short answer. Yes, you can. Both Shahdag and Tufandag are reached on asphalt roads, so in spring, summer and autumn a front-wheel-drive crossover is all you need. In winter, on a clear day, four-wheel drive isn’t essential either; to be ready for snow, book the winter package for the same car straight away: winter tyres plus a kit for cold-weather driving. A 4×4 really earns its keep only when your route leaves the asphalt for a dirt track to a remote village.

“I’m heading to the mountains, so I need an SUV, right?” It’s one of the first questions guests ask before a mountain trip. The reasoning makes sense: mountains, hairpin bends and, in winter, snow. But the drive to Azerbaijan’s two main ski resorts isn’t off-road. It’s paved, and when it snows the road services clear it. So the better question isn’t “which drivetrain?” but “which season am I travelling in, and what tyres will the car have?” Here is how Karavan Rent A Car in Baku answers it, season by season.

The roads to the resorts

Shahdag Tufandag
Where it is Qusar District, km 29 of the Qusar–Laza road Qabala District, Durja village on the edge of Qabala
Distance from Baku about 210 km about 220 km
Route Baku–Quba highway, the Quba–Qusar road, then the mountain road from Qusar to Shahdag the Baku–Shamakhi–Yevlakh highway to Muganli, then via Ismayilli to Qabala
Driving time about three hours three to three and a half hours to Qabala
Ski slope altitude 1,435–2,552 m 956–1,920 m

The climb to Shahdag starts after Qusar: around 30 km of uphill road, widened as the resort grew. Tufandag sits right on the outskirts of Qabala, with slopes that begin below 1,000 metres.

What all-wheel drive actually does

All-wheel drive splits the engine’s pull between all four wheels, which helps you pull away and keep climbing on a slippery surface. Stopping is another matter. Every car brakes on all four wheels, and grip under braking and through a bend comes from the tyres, not the transmission. After testing cars on snow, the US magazine Consumer Reports put it bluntly: all-wheel drive is about getting moving, not about braking or steering.

On dry or wet asphalt, a front-wheel-drive crossover copes with a mountain road confidently. Its engine sits over the driven wheels, and that weight helps traction on a climb. Ground clearance is ample too. The Renault Kaptur in our fleet has 204 mm, and Toyota quotes roughly 195–206 mm for the RAV4 and Corolla Cross, depending on the market. That’s plenty for a paved hairpin road.

What to rent in each season

When you travel Road conditions What to choose
Spring, mid-March to May asphalt, but changeable weather up high a front-wheel-drive crossover; check the resort forecast before you set off
Summer dry asphalt and cool air at the top any front-wheel-drive crossover
Autumn asphalt, though early snow is possible at altitude a front-wheel-drive crossover; if snow is forecast, move your trip
Winter, clear weather a cleared road, cold and morning ice a front-wheel-drive crossover; the winter package in case of snow and for extra grip in the cold
Winter, snow forecast snow and ice on the mountain stretch a front-wheel-drive crossover with the winter package; in heavy snow, wait it out

Mountain snow doesn’t wait for the calendar. On 23 October 2026, the National Hydrometeorological Service reported snowfall at Shahdag, yet the winter package is only available from 1 December to 15 March. Between seasons, if snow is in the resort forecast, it’s safer to push your trip back a day or two and let the road crews clear the way.

The winter package: front-wheel drive plus winter tyres

Summer and all-season tyres harden in the cold and lose grip. Tyre makers such as Continental advise switching to winter tyres once temperatures drop below 7 °C, because their compound stays soft in the cold. Consumer Reports reached the same conclusion from the other side: some all-wheel-drive cars on all-season tyres struggled to stay on course in snow, and winter tyres gave the best grip for starting, stopping and cornering, whatever the drivetrain.

So in winter, the smart move isn’t a bigger car but the right tyres. On a standard rental, every car from Karavan Rent A Car in Baku comes with all-season tyres and antifreeze. For mountain trips, add the winter package:

  • a set of winter tyres;
  • screenwash that won’t freeze in a frost;
  • a brush and scraper to clear snow and ice;
  • a compact 3-in-1 unit: tyre inflator, battery booster and torch;
  • a tow rope, in case the car needs pulling out;
  • gloves for handling the rope and shovel;
  • a folding shovel that takes up almost no boot space.

The package works for a weekend or a long rental. There aren’t many cars on winter tyres, and demand climbs sharply at the height of the ski season. So if you’re travelling in winter, order the package when you book: at that point the forecast for your travel day usually isn’t known yet. Each item in the kit is explained in our winter package guide.

When you really do need all-wheel drive

An SUV makes sense when your route leaves the asphalt for a dirt track to a remote mountain village or guesthouse. That’s where four-wheel drive and high clearance pay off, and our mountain-trip car ranking lists the models that cope best. If six or seven of you are travelling with luggage, look at the all-wheel-drive, seven-seat Hyundai Santa Fe.

Some situations, though, aren’t solved by four driven wheels. Heavy snow is best waited out in any car: driving all four wheels doesn’t make a snowy descent any safer. Turning off into a field or onto a hillside is off-road driving, and no policy, full insurance included, pays for damage done there. Khinalig is also off limits for company cars: the way there runs along sheer drops.

What the road authorities say

During the snowfalls of December 2025, Azerbaijan’s State Agency of Automobile Roads cleared and gritted the Quba–Qusar, Qusar–Shahdag, Muganli–Ismayilli–Qabala and Baku–Shamakhi–Yevlakh roads, giving priority to mountain and foothill stretches. In those same days, the road police urged drivers to use tyres suited to the season and advised anyone with little mountain driving experience to postpone their trip if possible. In January 2026, during heavy snow, the police explicitly recommended winter tyres rather than standard ones on snow and ice, checking tread depth and pressure, and not heading into the mountains unless absolutely necessary.

Your pre-trip checklist

  1. Check the forecast for the resort, not for Baku. The capital can be dry while it’s snowing up high.
  2. Keep warm clothes and water in the car. If you have to sit out a snowfall or a road is closed for a while, the wait will be far more comfortable.
  3. Drive the mountain road in daylight. Time your departure so you climb to the resort and come back down before dark.
  4. Use a low gear on descents, and on snow leave a longer gap and keep your steering and pedal inputs smooth.
  5. Save the 24/7 support number. Should the car develop a fault you didn’t cause, a technician comes out, a tow truck follows if necessary, and you get a replacement car.

Which crossover to choose

The most-booked front-wheel-drive crossovers in our fleet are the Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Corolla Cross, Geely Monjaro, Changan UNI-Z, Changan Qiyuan Q07, Renault Kaptur and Kia Soul. For a couple or a family with children, the Corolla Cross and Sportage are easy companions. For a long, comfortable drive, pick the Qiyuan Q07 or Monjaro. And the compact, high-riding Kaptur suits drivers who like to detour to small villages along paved lanes. Luggage space, engines and dimensions are compared in our top 10 rental crossovers.

How to book a crossover for a mountain trip

  1. Choose a crossover at karavan.az.
  2. Text a manager on WhatsApp or Telegram: your dates, which resort, how many people, and “winter package” for a winter trip.
  3. Confirm it: pop photos of your passport and driving licence into that chat and pay 20% up front, and you’ll receive a voucher.

Why trust a mountain trip to the market leader

Founded on 5 October 2008, Karavan Rent A Car in Baku has spent 18 years becoming Azerbaijan’s biggest car hire firm, with over 400 vehicles in eight classes. It holds the chair of ACRA, the national association of car rental companies, runs management systems that Bureau Veritas has certified against ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, and has collected over 10,000 customer reviews. On a mountain road, that translates into a car serviced every 5,000 km.

Questions and answers

Can a front-wheel-drive crossover reach Shahdag in winter?

Yes, as long as the road is cleared and the car is on winter tyres from the winter package.

Can I go in a saloon instead?

In the warm months, a saloon will manage the paved road fine. A crossover simply gives you a higher seating position, more clearance and a bigger boot for mountain-holiday gear.

What should I do if it starts snowing on the way?

Slow down, leave a bigger gap and try not to stop on an uphill stretch: pulling away on a snowy slope is harder than keeping moving. If the snowfall gets heavier, wait it out in the nearest town and call our 24/7 support if you need help.

Can I collect the car in Quba or Qabala?

Yes. Arrange delivery to the region with your manager when you book.

The bottom line

A front-wheel-drive crossover will get you to Shahdag and Tufandag in any season, as long as the road is open and cleared. In spring, summer and autumn the car alone is enough; in winter, the tyres make the difference. That’s why a familiar crossover with the winter package is a smarter choice than a big SUV on all-season tyres. Save the SUV for dirt roads to remote villages.
