Shahdag Weather by Month and Season: Temperatures, Snow, the Road and Which Car to Rent — a Guide from Karavan Rent A Car in Baku

Shahdag Weather by Month – Karavan Rent A Car in Baku

⚠️ Please note. This guide is for information only. Karavan Rent A Car in Baku does not make bookings at the Shahdag resort and cannot help with matters relating to how it operates. The resort’s rules, schedules and prices may change, so check current terms directly with Shahdag Mountain Resort.

Shahdag weather at a glance. In summer, days around the resort average +18 to +21 °C and nights +8 to +11 °C. In winter, days hover around −2 to 0 °C and nights drop to −8 to −10 °C, while in a hard frost, the resort says, it can reach −20 °C. May and June bring the most rain, and snow can fall at Shahdag from October to May, occasionally even in August. For a trip at any time of year, Karavan Rent A Car in Baku recommends a crossover, and in winter a crossover with the winter package.

A weather forecast usually gives a single number for a single point, and for a mountain resort that isn’t enough: the weather here depends on altitude as much as on the month, and snow turns up well outside winter. Below is everything worth knowing before you go: a month-by-month table, what each month is like, the difference between the bottom and top of the slopes, road conditions, clothing, where to check the forecast and which car to rent.

Shahdag in numbers

Shahdag weather by month

Month Day, °C Night, °C Rain/snow, mm Wet days
January −2 −10 35 9
February −1 −9 50 10
March +3 −5 69 13
April +8 −1 93 12
May +14 +4 133 14
June +18 +8 165 10
July +21 +11 126 7
August +21 +11 108 6
September +17 +7 110 7
October +12 +2 81 10
November +4 −4 62 9
December 0 −8 39 9

These are long-term averages for 1991–2020 around the resort, published by weather-and-climate.com from Copernicus climate data and the forecaster Foreca. Any given day can differ sharply from the average, and different weather services give noticeably different figures for Shahdag because they calculate conditions for different points and altitudes. So before you set off, use a forecast that states its altitude clearly.

Bottom versus top: how much colder it is by the upper lifts

The resort’s lowest point is at 1,435 m and its highest at 2,552 m. In the standard atmosphere, temperature drops by about 6.5 °C per kilometre, so on that basis the 1,117 m between base and top works out at roughly 7 °C: if it’s +5 °C at the base, it may be around −2 °C at the top. Treat this as a guide rather than a rule. On clear, still nights, cold air drains downhill, and the base can end up colder than the slopes above it. For skiers the takeaway is simple: dress for the weather at the top, not in the car park.

Shahdag Snowfall and Winter Weather – Karavan Rent A Car in Baku

Winter: December to February

Shahdag weather in December

Winter and the ski season both begin: the resort usually opens its slopes in the second half of December, and our guide to the ski season in Azerbaijan has more detail. Snow falls on about nine days in the month, and the wind makes the cold bite: on 25 December 2025, Azerbaijan’s National Hydrometeorological Service recorded winds of up to 20 m/s at Shahdag. Daylight at the end of December is the shortest of the year, about 9 hours 10 minutes, and early in the month the sun sets in Qusar at around 17:15. Leave Baku in the morning so you tackle the hairpins in daylight.

Shahdag weather in January

January is the coldest month of the year and also the driest: less precipitation falls than in any other month, and almost all of it comes as snow.

Shahdag weather in February

February is nearly as cold but snowier than January: precipitation picks up, with snow on about ten days in the month.

The road in winter. The Qusar–Shahdag mountain road leads to the country’s largest ski resort, and it is a priority for road crews after snowfall. For example, when snow fell in December 2025, Azerbaijan’s State Agency of Automobile Roads ploughed and gritted the Quba–Qusar and Qusar–Shahdag roads, dealing with the mountain and foothill sections before anything else. The trickiest moments come while the snow is actually falling and early in the morning, when ice lingers on shaded asphalt.

What to wear in winter:

  • a thermal base layer and a fleece;
  • a windproof hooded jacket and warm trousers, waterproof ones if you’re skiing;
  • a hat, gloves and a neck warmer (snood) to keep the wind off your face;
  • winter boots with grippy soles;
  • sunglasses or ski goggles and sunscreen: according to the World Health Organization, fresh snow almost doubles your UV exposure.

Spring: March to May

Shahdag weather in March

March still behaves like winter, and there is plenty of snow on the slopes: snow-forecast.com’s long-term statistics put Shahdag’s snowiest week in the third week of March. The met service also records fog in March: on 21 March 2024 it hung over Shahdag while the snow cover stood at 43 cm.

Shahdag weather in April

Days turn milder, nights hover around freezing, and there’s still plenty of snow on the slopes: on 6 April 2026 the met service recorded snow cover 1.24 m deep at Shahdag. The ski season usually runs until early April if snow allows.

Shahdag weather in May

May has the most wet days of the year, 14 on average. Snow is still possible: in 2024 the met service reported snowfall at Shahdag on 4 and 9 May, the second time leaving a 5 cm layer. Trails turn soggy with rain and melting snow.

The road in spring. Snow and ice can still appear on the mountain section in March and April, and in fog, dipped headlights and a longer gap are essential.

What to wear in spring:

  • in March, dress for winter: a warm jacket, hat and gloves;
  • in April and May, wear layers: a T-shirt, a fleece and a waterproof jacket you can shed at midday and put back on towards evening;
  • waterproof shoes with a good tread;
  • a rain jacket or a compact umbrella, which you’ll almost certainly need in May.

Summer: June to August

Shahdag weather in June

June is the wettest month of the year, with more than four times as much precipitation as January. On the plus side, it has the longest days, about 15 hours 10 minutes of daylight. In 2023, for example, the resort’s summer season opened in late June.

Shahdag weather in July

Along with August, July is the warmest month and the best time to escape the Baku heat. In July Baku averages +30 °C by day and +24 °C at night, while Shahdag is roughly 9 °C cooler by day and 13 °C cooler after dark. There are about seven wet days.

Shahdag weather in August

August has the fewest wet days of the year, six on average. But the mountains are still the mountains: the met service’s bulletin for the morning of 23 August 2020 listed 5 cm of snow at Shahdag, even though daytime highs in mountain districts had reached +13 to +16 °C.

The road in summer. The asphalt is usually dry, but braking distances grow after rain, and on long descents it pays to spare the brakes by using a lower gear.

What to wear in summer. “It’s summer, so it’ll be hot” is only half true. A T-shirt is fine by day, but a light jacket or windbreaker is a must even if Baku is sweltering: it’s cool in the shade, in the wind and after sunset. Also pack:

  • light trousers, plus a fleece or jumper for the evening;
  • in June, a waterproof jacket instead of a windbreaker;
  • closed shoes for mountain trails;
  • a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen: the WHO notes that UV intensity rises by almost 10% with every 1,000 metres of altitude.

Autumn: September to November

Shahdag weather in September

September is an extension of summer: days as warm as early June, cool nights and about seven wet days.

Shahdag weather in October

October is noticeably cooler, nights edge towards freezing, and snow can already fall: on 23 October 2026, for instance, the met service reported snowfall at Shahdag. By the end of the month daylight shrinks to about 10 hours 35 minutes.

Shahdag weather in November

November is the run-up to winter: chilly days, frost at night, and rain or snow on about nine days in the month.

The road in autumn. In September it’s usually dry, while from October mornings can bring frost and ice in the shade.

What to wear in autumn:

  • in September, the same as early summer, with a warm layer for the evening;
  • in October, a mid-weight jacket, a jumper and closed shoes;
  • in November, a winter jacket, hat and gloves.

  • The four webcams on shahdag.az (Live camera section) show whether there’s snow on the ground or fog rolling in.

Shahdag Weather by Season – Karavan Rent A Car in Baku

Which car to rent for Shahdag in each season

Season Car What to add
Winter crossover the winter package
Spring crossover the winter package in March, while it’s available
Summer crossover no extras needed
Autumn crossover no extras needed

Karavan Rent A Car in Baku recommends a crossover in every season. The higher driving position gives you a better view on the hairpins, and the extra ground clearance helps where a saloon might scrape its underside: on uneven turn-offs to car parks and viewpoints, in slush along the verge and on stretches washed by meltwater. A crossover’s boot also swallows suitcases and gear with ease. Popular choices include the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Changan Qiyuan Q07 and Toyota Corolla Cross, and you’ll find more options in our top 10 rental crossovers.

In winter, add the winter package to your crossover: a set of winter tyres and kit for cold roads, from a brush and scraper to a folding shovel. It is offered from 1 December until 15 March. You select it when booking online, and it must be ordered at least 48 hours before you collect the car. Each item is explained in our winter package guide.

If you’re unsure which car suits your dates and the forecast, message a manager on WhatsApp or Telegram: they’ll suggest the right models and tell you whether you need the winter package.

How to book a car for your Shahdag trip

Pick a car at karavan.az and select the options you need, or simply message a manager. The booking is confirmed in that same chat: share pictures of your passport and licence, make a 20% advance payment, and you’ll receive a voucher. The car then arrives with a delivery service manager, who carries a contract already drawn up in your name, whether you’re at the airport, your hotel or another address, day or night. If you’d rather leave no deposit and not worry about scratches, choose “All Risks Zero” cover.

What the market leader brings to a mountain trip

Karavan Rent A Car in Baku was founded on 5 October 2008, and 18 years on it remains Azerbaijan’s biggest rental firm, running a fleet of over 400 cars in eight classes. It holds the chair of ACRA, which brings together the country’s rental companies; Bureau Veritas has confirmed that its management systems meet ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001; and its customer reviews now number more than 10,000. In the mountains, that translates into practical things: the cars get a service at 5,000 km intervals, and should one break down through no fault of yours, round-the-clock support arranges a technician and, when needed, a tow truck and a replacement vehicle.
